Alice Cornelia Owen Runkle, 90, widow of Howard Franklin Runkle, died Thursday, December 3, 2009 at Summit Square in Waynesboro. The daughter of the late William Thomas and Nannie Puryear Owen, Alice was a graduate of Clarksville High School with the Class of 1936 and Roanoke Memorial Hospital School of Nursing Class of 1942. She served as an Army Nurse Lt. in World War II in Germany and Belgium. She was a member of Main Street United Methodist Church in Waynesboro. Mrs. Runkle worked at McGuire Veterans Hospital, Waynesboro Community Hospital, and Waynesboro Associated Physicians. She retired in 1980. Funeral services will be 2PM Sunday in the chapel at Watkins Cooper Lyon Funeral Home with the Reverend Jane Lyon officiating. Interment will follow in Buffalo Baptist Church Cemetery. Mrs. Runkle is survived by her sister, Alma O. Hite of Buffalo Junction and nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her sisters, Grace Owen, Ruby Wagstaff McNair, Frances Fleming, Eunice Griffin and brothers, Roy and Thomas Own. The family will receive friends prior to the service, from 1-2PM.
