Mrs. Anne Graham Smith, 78, wife of William E. Smith, died unexpectedly Wednesday, January 7, 2009 at her home. Native to North Carolina, Anne was the daughter of James Aubrey, Sr. and Mattie Bullock Graham of Robeson County. Anne was a graduate of Charlotte Memorial Hospital School of Nursing and later moved to England and worked as a nurse in Norwich Hospital. She served on the National Board of Occupational Health Nurses and also served as President of Virginia Occupational Health Nurses Association. Anne was retired from Burlington Industries where she was the Occupational Nurse for 17 years. Anne was a member of the Twin Rivers Garden Club and a member and Elder at Clarksville Presbyterian Church. In addition to her husband, Anne is survived by her son, William Jeffrey Smith and his wife Sherri of Raleigh, NC; her daughter, Martha Smith Collett and her husband, Sterling of Morganton, NC; her daughter, Margaret Smith Johnson and her husband, Erik of Richmond, her siblings, Martha G. Bailey of Clemson, SC, Nell Skinner Lyon of Lumberton, NC; James A. Graham, Jr. of Laurinburg, NC and grandchildren, Sterling Ruffin Collett, IV, Elliot Wilhelm Johnson, Graham Smith Collett, Clark Edward Johnson, Louis Stephen Johnson, Anne Tod Collett, Caroline Elizabeth Smith and Mattie Lee Johnson. The family will receive friends 7-9PM Friday at Watkins Cooper Lyon Funeral Home. A memorial service will be held at Clarksville Presbyterian at 11 AM on Saturday. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to Clarksville Presbyterian Church, P.O. Box 717, Clarksville, VA 23927 to be directed to Duke University Alzheimer's Research.
