Bernice Nichols Fussell

Bernice Nichols Fussell, age 97, of Halifax, VA, passed away on Thursday, July 18, 2024. She was born on November 19, 1926 in Halifax County, VA to the late Thomas Mason Nichols Sr. and Ethel Crews Nichols. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband Kenneth Eugene Fussell.

Bernice was a dedicated teacher for over 30 years, having taught in both Halifax and Mecklenburg Counties. She was a graduate of Halifax County Schools, received her B.S. from Longwood University, and earned her Masters of Education from the University of Virginia.

She is survived by her daughter, Paige Hunter of Seattle, WA; granddaughter, Natalie Hunter Smith of Snoqualmie, WA; grandson, Maxwell Hunter of Snoqualmie, WA; great grandchildren, Charlie Smith, Isaac Smith, Luke Hunter, and Mia Hunter; great-niece, Laura Beth Young; and great-nephew, Matt Young. Bernice is further survived by her faithful friends, Sterling Lacks and Cindy Hudson.  She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, and her brothers, Jimmy Gray Nichols and Thomas M. Nichols, Jr.

A graveside service will be held in Clover Cemetery on Wednesday, July 24, 2024 at 11:00 AM. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to First Care Hospice at 425 Main St. South Boston, VA 24592.
