Bertha Rice Elliott

Bertha Rice Elliott of Virgilina passed away on Friday, January 26, 2024 at the blessed life of 101.  Born in Granville County, NC on September 10, 1922 she was the daughter of the late William Arthur Rice and Lucy Morris Rice. She was preceded in death by her husband, James Thomas Elliott.

Bertha was around five years old when her father and mother bought a farm in Halifax County and the family moved here.  She was the oldest of 10 children.  Bertha was married to James Thomas Elliott in 1939 and he passed in November of 1946, leaving her a widow at the age of 24. They had four children. After James' death, Bertha's father moved her back home so that he and her mother could help out with the children.  Burlington Industries opened around that time and she went to work there and retired after 40 years.  Bertha was well known in her community for her good cooking - especially her pies and cakes, lemon chess & chocolate chess and coconut, pineapple and strawberry with seven minute icing. She was able to make rolls for family gatherings until she was about 94. These were greatly enjoyed  by family and friends.

Bertha was baptized at Union Christian Church in Virgilina and has been a member ever since.  Although she was unable to attend the last few years, she is the church's oldest member. She moved to Triple Springs, NC after her mother and father passed away.  She has lived in what we call the family village since 1998.
Bertha is survived by her children, James Norman Elliott, Carolyn E. Harris, Gladys E. Glasscock and Winston Elliott; numerous grandchildren, great grandchildren and great great grandchildren; brothers, Thomas, Cecil and Douglas Rice. In addition to her parents and her husband, she was preceded in death by siblings, Willie Glasscock, Rebecca Honeycutt, Dorothy Epps, William Rice, Emma Rice and Helen Newton.
The family has been blessed to have such a Godly woman in their lives. She was the heart and soul of the family.

A Funeral Service will be held at 2:00 PM on Monday, January 29, 2024 at Union Christian Church with Reverend Norman Talley officiating.  Burial will follow at Virgilina Cemetery.  The family will receive friends on Sunday night, January 28th, from 6 PM - 8 PM at Union Christian Church and other times at 1426 Olive Branch Road, Roxboro, NC.
