SOUTH BOSTON Carl Elvin Newbill, Jr., went home to be with his Lord and Savior on Monday, December 11, 2017. God blessed Carl with a peaceful heavenly journey after years of battling heart and kidney disease.He suffered through his illness with grace, a jovial sense of humor and no complaints.Carl was so much to so many people.He was a trust-worthy businessman, a kindhearted friend, a caring son, a benevolent brother and a generous soul to anyone with a need.Above all, he was a loving husband to his beloved wife Sarah and a valued father to his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He was active in the auto body repair business for more than 50 years ending his professional career as owner of Newbill’s Body Shop in South Boston.If you didn’t find him at the shop, chances were he had slipped away to the lake for a little fishing with a buddy.Fishing was one of his favorite pastimes and crappie was his favorite catch.Auto racing was another of his passions having been both a driver and car-owner at South Boston Speedway with his number 77 car.Many happy days were shared with family and friends at the speedway.Before his health issues became too great, he was a devoted member of Mt. Cana United Methodist Church.He served as the Mt. Cana Men’s Club treasurer for many years and was one of the original stew masters and stew salesman for the Men’s club.Hyco Road Ruritan Club is another community endeavor to which he was devoted as long as he was physically able. He was the eldest child of Carl Newbill, Sr. and Thelma Wilmouth Newbill born on April 14, 1934 in Dryburg, VA.He is survived by his wife of 39 years, Sarah; children, Brenda Lowery and husband Fred, Delain Dillow and husband Todd, Janet Gravitt and husband Donald, and Ronnie Newbill, as well as bonus children Sandra Conner and husband Mitch and Travis Smith and wife Angel; his brothers, Jackie and wife Sandra, Harvey and wife Edwina and Larry and wife Norma; his sisters Betty Newbill, Nancy Thomas and husband Steve, and Peggy Hazelwood and husband Hampton.He is also survived by grandchildren Nickie Crenshaw and friend Michael, Devin Dillow, Taylor Dillow, Cliff Lewis and wife Theresa, Kyle Gravitt and wife Jackie, Dean Newbill, Courtney Newbill, Matthew Conner and wife Rebecca, and Ceciley Thomason and husband Shane as well as 8 great-grandchildren and his beloved four legged companion, Gypsy.He was preceded in death by his parents, his brother Evan Newbill and his grandson, Andrew Smith. The family will receive friends from 7 pm to 8:30 pm at Brooks Lyon Funeral Home on Wednesday, December 13, 2017 and other times at the residence, 3107 E. Hyco Road, South Boston.Funeral services will be held Thursday, December 14 at 2:00 PM at Brooks Lyon Betty B. Jones Chapel with The Reverend Patricia Neilsen and The Reverend Randy Holmes officiating.Interment will follow at Halifax Memorial Gardens.
