Mrs. Carrie Lucille Ford Pool passed away peacefully at her home on Saturday, August 31, 2024, two weeks shy of her 101st birthday. Born in South Boston on September 14, 1923, she was the daughter of the late James David Ford and Pearl Ratliff Ford.
After high school, Mrs. Pool attended business school in Lynchburg, Virginia, and then moved to Washington, D.C. during World War II to work in the Naval Shipyard. Upon returning to South Boston, she met John Pool, and they were married in 1944. Their marriage was blessed with two sons, the late John Thurston Pool, Jr and Delbert Edgar Pool, and one daughter, Donna Pool Wilkins. While her husband worked and traveled with the American Tobacco Company, Mrs. Pool held various jobs, but considered providing a nurturing home and raising her children to be her most rewarding accomplishment. In her later years, she affectionately became “GiGi” to eight grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandson.
She lived to be one-hundred years old and until her final weeks, her body and mind were as strong as her kind spirit. She enjoyed her retirement and final years on her farm in Buffalo Junction, named Whippoorwill Hill, a dream she and her husband began in 1968. She found joy in nature, planting flowers, watching the birds and listening to the sound of the creek. She preferred to stay at home, but always welcomed the company of her family. Due to her long life and kind heart, her family grew to encompass innumerable extended relatives, all of whom regarded her as their grandmother, their matriarch, the best person they knew.
Mrs. Pool was preceded in death by her husband, John Thurston Pool; her son, John Thurston Pool, Jr; her daughter-in-law Nancy LaNeave Pool, as well as her parents and her two siblings, Alice Elizabeth “Betsy” Gravitt and Giles Henry Ford.
Family will receive visitors at Whippoorwill Hill, the home of Donna Wilkins, 259 Love Town Road in Buffalo Junction. Funeral services will be Tuesday, September 3, 2024 at Jamieson Memorial Global Methodist Church in Clarksville at 2pm.
Contributions may be made to Sentara Halifax Hospice (2220 Wilborn Avenue, South Boston, Virginia 24592) or Jamieson Memorial Global Methodist Church (219 Fifth Street, Clarksville, Virginia 23927).
