VIRGILINA - Mr. Curtis Ray Puryear of Virgilina passed away on Wednesday June 12, 2019 at the age of 76. He was born in Halifax Co., VA on September 3, 1942 the son of the late John Edward Puryear and the late Grace Gravett Puryear. Curtis was married to Brenda Whitt Milam Puryear. A veteran of the U.S. Air Force, Mr. Puryear was a graduate of Halifax Co. High School and received an Associate’s Degree from Smithdeal-Massey Business College. He worked with the Bank of Virginia, was the owner of an aquarium manufacturing and pet supply store, and was employed by Southern States. Curtis enjoyed fishing, racing, and shooting pool. His grandchildren were his pride and joy. Survivors include his wife, Brenda Whitt Milam Puryear; son, Will Puryear of Steamboat Springs, CO; daughter, Beth Ward and husband, Justin of Richmond; sister, Joy Lovelace and husband, Pete of Cluster Springs; brother, Jerry Puryear of South Boston; grandchildren, Chase Rutherford, Ryland Ward, and Aiden Ward; and nephew and nieces; Mickey Puryear, Martha Shotwell, Spud Puryear, Virginia New, and Katrina Reyes. He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Bruce Puryear; a nephew, Rex Puryear; and a niece, Vicky Lynn Puryear. A memorial service will be held on Tuesday, June 18, 2019 at 2:00 PM at Shady Grove United Methodist Church with Reverend Shayne Estes officiating. The family will receive friends at the home, 1100 Whitt Farm Trail, Virgilina. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to the Chesapeake Bay Foundation, Attn: Membership Department, 6 Herndon Ave., Annapolis, MD 21403 or online at www.cbf.org.
