Dennis Richard Hughes

Dennis Richard Hughes, of Clarksville, Virginia passed away on Monday, January 6, 2025, at the age of 81 after a brief illness with cancer. He was born in Bath, New York on October 10, 1943, to LeRoy Hughes and Mary Ruth Gottshall Hughes. Dennis was united in marriage to May Belair on July 18, 1970.

Dennis retired from Lockheed Martin after 32 years of service as an Electronics Engineer. He also served in the Army during the Vietnam War. In addition to his wife, Dennis is survived by his daughter, Tina Hughes (Don) of Cary, North Carolina; two sons, Frank Hughes (Carol) of Virginia Beach and Joseph Hughes of Buffalo, New York; two brothers, Gary Hughes (Mary) of Papillion, Nebraska and Mark Hughes (Kathy) of Wake Forest, North Carolina. His grandchildren, Christopher Ward (Katy), Virginia Beach, Virginia, Austin Hughes, Cary, North Carolina, Katherin Hughes, Buffalo, New York, Spencer Hughes, Cary, North Carolina. He also has two great-granddaughters, and several nieces and nephews.

He is predeceased by his parents, Leroy, October 26, 2002, and Ruth, February 9, 2007.

Dennis shared a special bond with two cousins whom he enjoyed traveling and shenanigans with—Gale Bagwell of Simpsonville, South Carolina and Carol Davis, Ft. Inn, South Carolina. Dennis was a lifetime member of Veterans of Foreign Wars, Roanoke River Post 8163, Clarksville, Virginia and a lifetime member of American Legion Adirondack Post 1118, Cold Brook, New York. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, golf and bowling, especially after retirement.

A memorial service will be held Saturday, January 25, 2024 at Watkins Cooper Lyon Chapel in Clarksville, Virginia at 2:00PM.
