Donald "Bruce" Barksdale

Donald “Bruce” Barksdale of South Boston, VA, passed away on Wednesday, July 26, 2023, at the age of 70. He was born in Halifax County on February 4, 1953, to the late William Barksdale and Geneva “Genny” Epps and was married to Helen Lloyd Barksdale, who survives. Bruce was retired from J.P. Stevens, but stayed busy working as a track official at South Boston Speedway, a job that he truly loved doing. He also volunteered at Sentara Halifax Hospital and with the South Boston Fire Department. Bruce loved life, people, animals and had a heart full of joy that spread to everyone around him. He will be sorely missed by many. He was a member of Winn's Creek Baptist Church and loved his church family.

Cherishing many fond memories are his loving wife, Helen; daughter, Tonya McDowell (Chris); his precious grandchildren, Andrew McDowell and Sydney McDowell; his dear sister, Cathy Rice (Allen); half-sisters, Peggy Jones (B.J.) and Sandra Oakes (Jeff) and many special cousins and friends.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 A.M. on Saturday, July 29 at Winn's Creek Baptist Church with the Reverends Jim Kopco and John Lewandowski officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends in the fellowship hall after the service concludes.
