Doris Eva Norton Helmsteadt

Doris Eva Norton Helmsteadt, 88, of Clarksville passed away on Saturday, February 16, 2019.Doris was born in Riverhead, New York on October 18, 1930, the daughter of Bryant and Ethel Norton.Doris studied to be a nurse while living in California where she earned her RN degree.She worked for several doctors in their private practices as well as in nursing homes. Doris and her late husband, John (Jack) Robert Helmsteadt were married for 36 years.They first made their home in Long Beach, California, followed by Long Island, NY and Melbourne, Florida before moving to Clarksville, Virginia.Doris worked at the Berry Hill Health and Rehab Center in South Boston before finally retiring to care for her ailing husband. In addition to her parents, Doris was predeceased by a sister, Joyce Bernhardt of Gloversville, NY and niece Cheryl Connell Tully of Lake Ronkonkoma, NY. Left to cherish her memories are sister, Kathryn Norton Connell of Middle Island, NY, nephew Thomas Connell (Veronica) of Medford, NY and nieces Kim Connell Golden (Thomas) of Medford, NY, Dawn Connell Genirs (Timothy) of Warren, New Jersey and Donna Bernhardt Bargy of Johnstown, NY. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10AM on Saturday, March 2, 2019 at St. Catherine of Siena Catholic Church in Clarksville, Virginia.Arrangements are being made by the Watkins Cooper Lyon Funeral Home, Clarksville.In lieu of flowers, the family is asking that memorial donations be given to the Mecklenburg County Cancer Association.
