Etheridge Monk Andrews

March 22, 1921 — April 11, 2006

Ethridge M. ?Monk? Andrews, a resident of Clarksville, died Tuesday, April 11, 2006 at the age of 85. He is survived by his wife, Gladys S. Andrews, one brother, C.E. Andrews of Richmond; two stepsons, Bryce Sneed of Richmond and Jerry Sneed of Houston, TX; four step grandchildren; four step great-grandchildren and a host of nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his first wife, Inez Andrews. Monk served in the U.S. Army in World War II as a Locomotive Engineer in France, Belgium and Germany. After returning to Richmond from the Army, he went back to work for the R.F. & P. Railroad. He received a leave of absence from the railroad to work for the City of Richmond, Department of Public Safety. Monk held the position of Chief of Bureau of Weights and Measures, Air Pollution Control and Boiler Inspection. After resigning from the City of Richmond, he went to work for the Royal Globe Insurance Companies where he retired in 1981 as Manager of the Engineering Division. Monk retired to live in Chase City where he served as Fire Marshal, Chaplain and a member of the Chase City Volunteer Fire Department, a member of American Legion Post # 43 and member of the Concord Baptist Church. He was well known throughout the area for his freeze-dried wild life exhibits and lectures at churches, schools and civic groups. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Chase City Volunteer Fire Department, P.O. Box 595 Chase City, Va. 23924, Mecklenburg County Life Saving and Rescue Squad, P.O. Box 1539 Clarksville, VA 23927 or Clarksville Volunteer Fire Department, P.O. Box 1371 Clarksville, VA 23927. Watkins Cooper Lyon Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. The body will lie in state one hour prior to the 2PM service on Thursday at the Mausoleum in Woodland Cemetery in Chase City. Reverend David Blakely will officiate.
