Florence Gravitt Buchanan

Mrs. Florence Gravitt Buchanan of Madison, VA, formerly of South Boston, went to be with the Lord on March 15, 2017 at the age of 79. She was born in Halifax County, VA on May 9, 1937, the daughter of the late Henry Newman Gravitt and the late Alice Cole Gravitt and was married to the late Oscar Clayton Buchanan. Florence was a member of Shady Grove United Methodist Church. She was retired from Tultex, where she was a machine operator for many years and her passion was quilting. Mrs. Buchanan is survived by her daughters, Angela B. Fitzgerald (Steve) of Midlothian, VA and Wanda Smoot (Steve) of Locust Dale, VA; her sons, Henry C. Buchanan (Gerald) of South Boston and Ricky D. Buchanan (Janis) of Barboursville, VA; her grandchildren, Gerald Clayton Buchanan, Jessica B. Hite, Wendy Jones, Jill Frazier, Julie Locher, Peter Fitzgerald, Alice Keltner, Kristin Fitzgerald, and Brook Keltner; her four great-grandchildren; and her sister, Janis G. Murray (Jimmy) of Mebane, NC. Other than her parents and husband, Mrs. Buchanan was predeceased by her brothers, the Reverend George Henry Gravitt and John Robert Gravitt, and her sister, Faye Gravitt. Funeral Services for Florence will be held on Sunday, March 19, 2017 at the Brooks Lyon Betty B. Jones Chapel at 3:00pm with the Reverend Jack Stewart officiating. Burial will follow in Virgilina Cemetery. The family will receive friends an hour before the service, 2:00-3:00PM and at other times at the home of Willie Wilson, 1174 Alphonse Dairy Rd, South Boston.
