Frances Ward Tarkenton, 99, widow of Carlos McClay Tarkenton, passed away Saturday, August 26, 2011 at her home. Frances was born July 13, 1912 in Clarksville. She was the daughter of the late William John and Virginia Gordon Ward. A graduate of Clarksville High School and Intermont College, Frances was a member of Buffalo Baptist Church where she was a faithful member of the choir. Known for her musical talents as a pianist and soloist, Frances often ministered through her music at funerals, weddings, and church activities. During World War II, she taught at Clarksville High School and later became a bookkeeper at Burlington Industries. Funeral services will be 2PM Saturday in the chapel at Watkins Cooper Lyon Funeral Home with the Reverend Chris Kiser officiating. Interment will follow at Oakhurst Cemetery. Frances is survived by her daughter, Jackie Sessoms of Virginia Beach and grandchildren, Whitt Sessoms, III and Jacqueline Frances Starkey, both of Virginia Beach. Her great grandchildren, Jack Ward Sessoms and Jennings Sessoms, both of Virginia Beach, also survive. A reception and visitation for family and friends will be prior to the service, starting at 12:30 PM at the funeral home.
