Frankie Stephen Talley passed away on Tuesday, March 26, at the Hundley Center, in South Hill, Virginia at the age of 82. He was born in South Boston on November 4, 1941, to the late Luther G. Talley & Mildred Gould Talley of Clarksville.
He is survived by his wife, Nancy Collins Talley, of Clarksville, daughter, Alyson Talley Elliott and husband Michael Edward Elliott, of Buffalo Junction. In addition, he is survived by three grandchildren, Jane Clare Elliott, Mitchell Stephen Elliott and Thomas Blaine Elliott, of Buffalo Junction, He is also survived by his brother, Johnny Lewis Talley, and his wife, Carolyn Revis Talley of Clarksville. Frankie was fortunate to also have many close friends that he and Nancy considered family.
A lifelong resident of Clarksville, Frankie loved his community and worked to improve it by serving on the Town Council as Vice Mayor for 12 years. He could often be found planting flowers and trees around town, such as the Fine Arts Center, Veterans Memorial, & many other places. He loved to help keep Clarksville beautiful.
Frankie graduated from Bluestone Senior High School in Skipwith, Virginia in 1960. In high school, he played baseball and enjoyed a successful career as a pitcher. He also played for Stuart Buchanan in the Connie Mac baseball league, where he furthered his pitching career.. One of his favorite memories was pitching against Enos Slaughter, of Roxboro, North Carolina, who played for the St. Louis Cardinals and Frankie’s beloved, New York Yankees.
Frankie was employed by Lake Sleepwear in Boydton for 24 years and Burlington Industries in Clarksville for 12 years. In his retirement, he worked for Watkins Cooper Lyon Funeral Home where his community relationships and calming demeanor made it possible for him to comfort many people. He also served on the board of the MCCSC, where he was instrumental, along with Joe Davidson & Stuart Buchanan in building “The Complex,” an accomplishment for which he felt much pride.
Frankie found great joy planting and spending time in his beautiful yard on Mansion Drive. He made sure that his plantings could produce blooms that could be enjoyed every season. He loved to spend time at home with family, but he would never turn down a chance to take a road trip for whatever meal he had a hankering for. He was a humble, gentle, kind soul that every animal seemed to be drawn to, especially his latest cat, Sammie.
