Garnet Carlton Overbey

Virgilina, VA –

Garnet Carlton Overbey, husband of Judy Morris Overbey, passed away on Wednesday, August 31, 2022, surrounded by loved ones. He was born in Halifax County on June 23, 1936, to the late John Owen and Tressie Trueheart Hite Overbey. Garnet worked for Burlington Industries as a leadman in the Sorting department until his retirement and in his early years, he drove for AE Morris Trucking. He will be remembered as a bare footed, free spirited, fun loving and humble man, who loved bluegrass music, dancing and bonfires. Garnet also liked to paint and do puzzles. He was a member at Hitesburg Baptist Church.

In addition to his wife of 46 years, Garnet is survived by daughters, Wendy O. Bowen (Dural) and Crystal L. Overbey (Charles); siblings, Jink Overbey (Carolyn) and Drusilla Newton; grandchildren, Agatha, Darren and Johnathan Bowen and Trey (Hannah), Cody and Carlton Nester as well as their father, Barry Nester. He is also survived by his goddaughter, Patricia M. Tilley (Collin); god grandchildren, Jaycee, Caitlyn and Cayden; 13 nieces and nephews, 23 great nieces and nephews and 10 great-great nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Tressie; brother, Hiter O. Overbey, nephew, Danny Newton and 2 brothers and 3 sisters at a young age.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, September 3 at Hitesburg Baptist Church with the Reverends Ian Rigney and Billy Coghill officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Those wishing to pay their respects may do so at Watkins Cooper Lyon on Friday, September 2 from 12 Noon until 5PM.
