George Richard Gilson

George Richard Gilson of Virgilina, VA, passed away on Wednesday, January 3, 2024, at the age of 79. Born in Atlantic City, New Jersey on June 2, 1944, he was the son of the late Valentine and Catherine Brodsky Gilson and was married to the late Roberta “Bert” Hackett Gilson. Mr. Gilson will be remembered as a strong, independent, organized man who was devoted to his family, always putting their needs before his own.  In high school, he was a talented baseball pitcher and was drafted by Pittsburgh.  George was a faithful employee of Lenox China in Oxford, NC for over 40 years. He also was a fantastic bowler.

Cherishing many fond memories are his children, Renee G. Overbey (Doran), Jeffery Gilson and Kenny Gilson (Jackie); grandchildren, Meghan O. Palmer (Brad), Jacob O. Perkins (Rhett), Melissa G. Wilson (Dylan) and Matthew Gilson; great grandchildren, Heath Gray Palmer, Wyatt Wilson and Avery Wilson and siblings, James Gilson (Jane) and Doris Polowczuk. In addition to his wife and parents, Mr. Gilson was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Marcella Overbey and siblings, Bobby Gilson and Eddie Gilson.

Funeral services will be held at 3:00 P.M. on Sunday, January 7, 2024 in the chapel at Watkins Cooper Lyon Funeral Home with the Reverend Mike West officiating. Burial will follow in Hitesburg Baptist Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home before the service beginning at 1:00 P.M.
