George Vance Powell

September 27, 1921 — July 13, 2004

Mr. George Vance Powell, RLS, 82, died July 13, 2004 in South Boston. He was born September 27, 1921 in Buffalo Junction to the late George Venable and Alice Laura Sizemore Powell. He was educated in the Mecklenburg County school system; the I.C.S. of Scranton Penn on Surveying & Mapping; Durham Technical Institute and Army Technical school. Mr. Powell operated a Land Surveying Office in Roxboro, NC for many years and then moved to Oxford, NC with the Survey office. He was a past Master of the Twin Rivers Masonic Lodge # 338 and a past Vice-Commander of the VFW Post # 8163. He was a member of Union Chapel Baptist Church where he held many positions including deacon and trustee; and was an Army veteran of World War II. The Reverends Jim Payne and Earnie Taylor will be conducting funeral services 11 AM Thursday at Union Chapel Baptist Church with interment in the church cemetery. In addition to being survived by his wife, Irene Owen Powell; he is survived by three daughters, Alice Kay Powell Candelora of Madison, MS; Margaret Elizabeth Powell Graham of Burkeville; and Mary Susan Powell Coates of Greensboro, NC. Two sisters, Margaret Powell Farley of Naples, FL and Rowena Powell Betz of Chambersburg, PA; six grandchildren and two step-grandchildren also survive him.
