Chase City, Virginia - Who was my mom? Geraldine M. Smith or Gerry or Mom as she liked to be called, was an amazing human being. She was born on August 9, 1925 to the late Willard Wilson and Mittie Davis Maples. She grew up in South Norfolk, Va. and attended South Norfolk High School, where she was the Captain of the girls’ basketball team. Mom was one of 8 children of the Maples Clan and was the very last one in her family. She was an animal advocate and would make anyone stand down that abused or harmed an animal. She and her little dog, Toby, were best buds for over 10 years. He passed away 2 months ago, leaving her broken hearted. At 93, she could out word seek anyone and she could tell you a thing or two about life and often did. Mom was an incredible tap dancer, only stopping when she turned 72, after the death of her beloved grandson, Nathan Louis Smith. On Sunday, June 16, 2019, Gerry joined her loves in their heavenly home. My mother was a bright beckon of light in my life and everyone else's she touched. She will be missed by family and friends. Her memory will be cherished by daughter, Rabiah Seminole; grandchildren, Jason Smith, Trey Smith and Nathalie Smith; great grandson, Cameron Smith and daughter-in-law, Susan Olsen Smith. She is preceded in death by son, Buddy Smith and grandson, Nathan Smith. A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. on Saturday, June 22, 2019 in the Watkins Cooper Lyon Funeral Home Chapel, 703 Virginia Ave., Clarksville, VA.
