Helen Pool Lowery, age 90, passed away peacefully at her home on Tuesday, July 30, 2024. She was born in Halifax County on February 4, 1934 to the late Lennie Pool and the late Nannie Comer Pool. She was preceded in death by her husband, Ralph H. Lowery, Sr. Also being the youngest of 12 children, she was preceded in death by sisters: Almelia and Juanita & brothers: Johnny, Fred, Sebastian, Harry, William Thomas, Richard, Bernard, George and Alfred.
Helen spent many years working in a job she enjoyed, cooking and waitressing. She cooked hamburgers, hot dogs and popped balloons for discounted ice cream sundaes at Newberry's until the store closed. When Newberry's closed, she moved across the street to Faulkner and Lawson's Drug to create those same great hamburgers and hot dogs until the drug store closed. Helen's next stop was Alton's Diner where she continued to create great hamburgers, hot dogs and grilled cheese sandwiches. She loved cooking at the restaurants and socializing with her customers.
Helen loved her family: her children, Jr (Vikki) and Mona (Doug); especially those grandchildren, Zachary (Brandi) and Lauren. Granny Helen loved her great grandchildren even more: Madison, Carlos, Francisco, Kimberly, Yessica & Yesenia, twins. The grandchildren loved her more than she loved them, especially those greasy eggs. She had enough love left over for all those nieces, nephews, friends and other children that came thru the door. Mama told me to make sure that I included her many thanks to all the nieces, nephews and friends that helped take care of her. Also, many thanks to our 1st Care at Home Hospice team, Kelly and Jennifer, who became a part of our family.
Helen's funeral is Saturday, August 3rd at 2:00 PM at Black Walnut Baptist Church, another special part of her life. The family will visit with friends on Friday, August 2nd at Brooks Lyon Funeral Home from 6:30 until 8:00, also visit with family one hour prior to the service, 1 PM to 2 PM at the church on Saturday.
In closing, Mama was loved by all especially by her family. She will be missed by anyone who had the opportunity to meet her. Mama would tell us, "Everything will be alright."
