Howard Garth ?Gobe? Goben, 82, husband of Virginia Halligan Goben, died Friday, September 22, 2006 at Halifax Regional Hospital. Born in Kilbourne, IL and raised in Havana and Springfield, IL, Garth was the son of the late Roy Preston and Ruth Helen Harris Goben. A graduate of Springfield High School and the University of Mississippi, he was a retired Navy Captain. Serving his country during World War II, Garth continued his career until July 1, 1975. In the course of his career he was awarded two Meritorious Service Medals, the Air Medal, the American Campaign Medal, the Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal with 2 stars, the World War II Victory Medal, the United Nations Service Medal, the Korean Service Medal and the Navy Occupation Service Medal. During his career he and Virginia traveled the world, but it was after retiring and making their home in Buffalo Junction, were they able to see the U.S.A. A Service of Remembrance with Military Rites will be 2PM Thursday, September 28th in the chapel at Watkins Cooper Lyon Funeral Home. The family will receive friends immediately after the service. Interment will be held at Mt. Zion Baptist Church Cemetery at a later date. In addition to his wife of 61 years, Garth is survived by daughters, Elizabeth Gerry O?Neill of Oak Ridge, TN and Virginia ?Ginger? Anne Weisbarth of Columbus, OH; and son, Richard Garth Goben of San Diego, CA. Also surviving are 4 grandchildren, 5 great grandchildren and brother, Robert Gail Goben of Crystal Lake, IL.
