Red Oak, VA Mr. Howard Alan Hershey, husband of Anne Lawson Hershey, passed away at his home on Friday, February 14, 2020 at the age of 80. He was born on November 20, 1939 in Akron, Ohio, the son of the late John Houck Hershey and the late Mildred Boughton Hershey. Alan was a graduate of Fairleigh Dickinson University with a Master’s Degree in Mathematics.He worked for Bell Labs for 30 years, with the title of Distinguished Member of the Technical Staff.Alan was a software developer, working on Artificial Intelligence, Computer Aided Design, and the development of guidance systems for national defense.He was a lay preacher in the Episcopal Church, and also preached in the United Methodist Church many times.Alan has served as Senior Warden for both St. John’s of Chase City and St. Timothy’s of Clarksville. After retiring in 1989 he moved to Red Oak to enjoy the farm life. In addition to his wife, he leaves behind to cherish his memories his sons, David Alan Hershey, and Stephen Lawson Hershey and wife, Laurie; sister, Cathy Bunch and husband, David; grandchildren, Kristina Marie Hershey and wife, Chelsea, and James Lawson Hershey and wife, Lisa. A Memorial Service will be held at 12 Noon on Monday, February 17, 2020 at St. Timothy’s Episcopal Church with interment following at Oakhurst Cemetery.The Reverend Susan Grimm will officiate.
