Skipwith, VA - Irene Moss Greene Propst, wife of Donald E. Propst, died peacefully in her sleep on Friday, March 8, one month shy of turning 88.She was born in Skipwith, VA, at home, to Robert B. and Leila Jeffries Moss on April 12, 1931.A graduate of Chase City High School, she attended Campbell College where she majored in music.She returned home and worked as a secretary at Pennington’s Mecklenburg Supply.She met her first husband, Donald W. Greene, when he came there to interview a pig for the radio station at which he worked.They were married in 1953 at New Hope Baptist Church.They eventually settled on the same farm, where Irene was born and in 1960 built a house, raising 4 children.Irene stayed home and made all the children’s clothes, gardened and put up everything grown to feed the family through the winters.She was an active member of New Hope Baptist Church, serving as the pianist, starting at age 11 and continuing until she was 78, as well as the choir director .She taught her children to work in the garden, mow the yard, fish, take care of their animals and many other life skills.In 1970, she was widowed when Don Greene died of a sudden heart attack.She went to work at Jackson Motors in Chase City and continued raising her 4 children alone.In 1977, she went on a date with widower, Donald Propst, when some mutual friends fixed them up.Six months later they were wed at New Hope Baptist Church with their six children in attendance.They lived in Clarksville for a few years and then moved back to the farm in Skipwith.They had a joyful life together and created a large, blended and loving family that eventually expanded to include 8 grandchildren and seven great grandchildren.Irene and Donald enjoyed going out on their pontoon boat, gardening, traveling – anything they did together they had fun. They often hosted large gatherings of friends at the farm for Stew. In October 2018 they celebrated their 40 year wedding anniversary. In the last years of her life at home, Irene especially enjoyed her cats, growing flowers –zinnias were favorite - and feeding and watching birds. Irene is survived by her husband, Donald E. Propst, children Penny Paskoff (Stan), Karen Greene, Brian M Greene (Rhonda), Denise Greene and two stepdaughters, Susan Bochman (Bob) and Mary Parker (Tommy), eight grandchildren: John Bochman (Michelle), Jessica Greene, Andrew Bochman (Sara), Adam Greene, Sarah Clowdis (Rob), Sam Paskoff, Nathan Parker (Crystal) and Laura Paskoff, and seven great grandchildren. Graveside funeral services will be held at 1pm on Wednesday, March 13 at New Hope Baptist Church with the Rev. Michael Reynolds officiating. The family will receive friends at a reception following the service in New Hope Baptist Church Fellowship Hall. The family is being served by Watkins Cooper Lyon Funeral Home, 703 Virginia Ave., Clarksville.
