James David "Jimmy" Epps, III of Halifax passed away on Friday, May 31, 2024 at the age of 83. Born in Halifax County on July 7, 1940, he was the son of the late James David Epps Jr and Mabel Loftis Epps Morningstar. He was preceded in death by his wife of 54 years, Mary Jane Watts Epps, whom he loved dearly.
Jimmy loved horses throughout his life and was a professional Tennessee Walking horse trainer. He loved music and played guitar with local musicians and performed twice with Scotty Moore, Elvis Presley's guitarist. Jimmy took his faith in Christ seriously.
He is survived by his sisters, Norma Epps Chaney and Scotty Epps Felton (John Cannon); nieces & nephews, Rodney "Rod" Chaney (Gayle), Gary Chaney (Anne), Melissa Felton Shaivitz (Adam) and Raleigh Felton IV (Kelsey); and a host of other friends and family members including James David Epps IV and James David Epps V.
A Funeral Service will be held at 3:00 PM on Sunday, June 2, 2024 at Brooks Lyon Funeral Home Chapel with Reverend Rod Chaney officiating. A private burial will follow at Bethel Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service beginning at 2:00 PM at Brooks Lyon Funeral Home.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made to Good Hope Equestrian Training Center, Inc., 1108 Wild Turkey Run, Halifax, VA 24558.
