James Harold Young

June 17, 1943 — August 6, 2022

James "Harold" Young of Virgilina, passed away on Saturday, August 6, 2022 at the age of 79, at Duke University Hospital. He was born in Halifax County, June 17, 1943 and was the son of the late Willie James Young and the late Inez Powell Young. He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Nancy Wilson Young; two sons, James Craig Young (fiancee, Jacqueline Wilkins, daughter, Laci), Jon Christopher Young (Stacy Scheier Young); and four grandchildren, Jeb Christian Young, Jacob Craig Young, Payton Marie Young and Jon Crue Young; brother, Jerry Wayne Young and numerous nieces and nephews.
He graduated from Virgilina Elementary School and Oak Hill High School in Oxford, NC and worked for Burlington Industries in Halifax for over 40 years in the Weave Department, Receiving and Shipping.
He is the 6th generation to hold the name "James" in his family. He was the grandson of James Aubrey Young, great grandson of James G. Young, great great grandson of Dr. James Taylor Young, Jr. (brother to Dr. Edward Rush Young) and great great great grandson of Dr. James Taylor Young, Sr who served in the North Carolina State Senate from Granville County.
He loved Bluegrass and Gospel music. He was a musician who played guitar, fiddle, banjo, base and mandolin. Over a period of more than 50 years, he sang and played in five gospel groups. He played with "The Gospel Five" (Thomas Averett, Tommy Martin, Richard Seate and Curtis Wilson); "The Ambassadors" (Dennis Hudson, Pat Newton, Richard Seate and Nathan Wilkins); "The Glory Road Quartet" (Pianist, Jean Oakley, Bill Oakley, J.D. Denny, Richard Seate and Wray Windham); "The Papa's & Sons" (Graley Whitlow, Darren Whitlow and Craig Young) and "Harold Young and Friends Bluegrass" (Doug Francis, Wayne Holt, Mike Johnson, Arnold Oakley and J.W. Sanders.
He was a member of Florence Avenue Baptist Church where he has served as Sunday school director, deacon, Sunday school teacher, choir director, song leader, choir member, Royal Ambassador leader, Baptist men's leader and various committees.
He was a wonderful person who never met a stranger. He loved his family and friends and had a great compassion for others. He was always willing to help someone in need.
Funeral services will be held at Florence Avenue Baptist Church, Virgilina, VA on Saturday, August 13, 2022 at 11:00 AM with Reverend Herbert Brown and Reverend Jack Stewart officiating. Interment will follow in Virgilina Cemetery. The family will receive friends on Friday, August 12th from 6-8 PM at Florence Avenue Baptist and at other times at the home, 4071 Wilson Road.

The family wishes to thank everyone for their outpouring of love, generosity and prayers over the last two weeks since he had cardiovascular surgery on July 20th.
