James Carroll Whitlow

James Carroll Whitlow of Danville, VA, passed away on Thursday, December 28, 2023 at the age of 83.  He was born in Halifax County on March 23, 1940 to the late James Maynard Whitlow and Louise Hazelwood Whitlow.

Carroll was a graduate of Halifax County High School, class of 1959. He married his high school sweetheart, Connie V. Comer, and then went on to attend Ferrum Jr. College before being drafted into the military. After his two years of service, Carroll took a position with the Danville Police Department, and he remained there until he was offered a job as a bookkeeper with Export Leaf Tobacco Company. Carroll was a long time employee of Export Leaf which eventually became Brown and Williamson. During his tenure with Brown and Williamson, he held the position of a G.M.O. Supervisor which lasted until his retirement.

Carroll was a Master Mason in good standing of Roman Eagle Lodge No. 122 in Danville, VA. He was of the Baptist faith and enjoyed hunting, golf and spending time with his grandchildren. He was also an avid collector of many unique items, but his devotion to his family was evident to all that met him. Carroll was a dedicated husband, father, and grandfather who took great joy in providing for and loving his family.

Carroll is survived by his wife of 64 years, Connie Comer Whitlow; his daughter, Tracey W. Lewis; and grandchildren, Jared R. Lewis and Alexandra L. Lewis. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Bobby L. Whitlow.

A Funeral Service will be held at 3:00PM on Saturday, January 6, 2024 at Brooks Lyon Funeral Home Chapel with Reverend Robert Wright officiating.  Burial will follow in Oak Ridge Cemetery. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service, 2 PM - 3 PM,  at Brooks Lyon Funeral Home.
