Jimmie Claiborne Hughes

Jimmie Claiborne Hughes, of South Boston, Virginia, passed away at his home on Friday, March 14th, 2025, at the age of 81.  Jimmie was born on January 1st, 1944, in Halifax County to the late Berry Ben Hughes and Ethel Richardson Hughes.

Jimmie proudly served his country as a member of the United States Army during the Vietnam War, where his bravery and dedication earned him the prestigious Bronze Star. Upon returning home, he devoted many years of service as a track worker, a career that highlighted his hardworking and steadfast nature, with the railroad.

Beyond his professional accomplishments and military service, Jimmie was widely recognized and celebrated within his community. He was inducted into the South Boston USBC Bowling Association Hall of Fame, an honor that signified his exceptional talent and passion for the sport. He and his son, Michael are the only father/son duo that has been awarded that honor. He has bowled in many local and national championships.  A man of many interests, he found joy and camaraderie in deep-sea fishing and playing softball, activities that mirrored his vibrant spirit and love for the outdoors. Many will remember him playing and coaching softball on many county leagues.

He is survived by his wife, Sharon "Sue" Ferrell Hughes; children, Pam Walker (Jan), Darlene Hudson, Keith Hughes (Bonnie), Michael Hughes (Kerrie Durling), Stacy H. Morris (Earl) & Elizabeth H. Cammack (Luke), Kathy Moorefield, Harold Moorefield (Carolyn) and Melanie Strohm (Nick); 25 grandchildren; 29 great grandchildren; siblings, Elizabeth H. Whitt, Kate H. Fisher (Dr. Richard Fisher), Ben Hughes (Linda) and sister-in-law, Frances Hughes, along with numerous nieces & nephews.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Jimmie Lynn Hughes; daughter, Karen Hughes; grandson, Justin Walker; granddaughter, Ashley Hudson; great granddaughter, Adiana Williams; siblings, Eddie Hughes, Jean Stanley & husband, Sherman Stanley, Mabel Ragsdale and a brother-in-law, Thomas Whitt.

Funeral Services will be held at 2:00 P,M, on Monday, March 17, 2025 at First Baptist Church of Millstone.  Burial will follow in the church cemetery with military honors. The family will receive friends on Sunday, March 16, 2025 from 6:00 P.M. until 7:30 P.M. at Brooks Lyon Funeral Home and other times at his home.

Jimmie will be tenderly remembered and forever missed by those who knew and loved him. His dedication to his country, his community, and his family will remain a lasting testament to his enduring spirit.
