Joan Thames Roberts

Joan Thames Roberts of Clarksville, VA, passed away on Monday, April 10, 2023, at the age of
71. She was born on January 26, 1952, in Oxford, NC, to the late Billy and Rosa Moore
Thames. Joan attended Bluestone Senior High School and graduated from St. Mary’s School in
1970. She continued her education and graduated from Averett University in 1977 with a degree
in Elementary Education. Upon graduating, Joan taught for Mecklenburg County Public
Schools, specifically Clarksville Elementary, as a 4th and 5th grade Math teacher for
approximately 20 years. After reluctantly retiring from teaching, she continued to tutor students
and was actively involved in Mecklenburg Junior Women’s Association as a sponsor. Joan was
an active member of Jamieson Memorial United Methodist Church and New Beginnings Circle.
She was also a member of Delta Kappa Gamma - Beta Phi Chapter, American Legion Auxiliary
#45, and the Clarksville Ruritans. In the early 80s, Joan served as Den Leader for Cub Scout
Troop 7450. Joan enjoyed time spent with friends and family and was always ready to hit the
road. From an early age, she enjoyed the company of her beloved dogs and cats.

Joan was preceded in death by her husband of 47 years, Stephen Bruce Roberts and her sister,
Teresa Thames Wilkinson of Clarksville, VA. Joan is survived by her son, Whitney Bradford
Roberts of Woodbridge, VA; daughter, Sarah Winn Roberts of Clarksville, VA; brother-in-law,
Barry Thomas Roberts (Betty) of Clarksville, VA; brother-in-law, Douglas Leon Wilkinson of
Nelson, VA; and nephews, Erik Leon Wilkinson (Melissa) and daughter, McKenzie of Chester,
VA, and Willis Heath Wilkinson (Kimberly) and son, Hudson of Chester, VA.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, April 14, 2023, at Jamieson Memorial
United Methodist Church. The family will receive friends immediately following the service.

In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to Mecklenburg County Cancer Association or
Lake Country SPCA.
