John Wilbur Heck, 78, husband of Andrea Huth Heck, went home to be with the Lord on Thursday, May 18, 2006 in Chesapeake General Hospital. A native of Reading, PA. John was the son of Wilbur and Salome Ruth Weidenhammer Heck. He graduated from Lebanon Valley College in Pennsylvania with a B.A. in Music Education; and from Temple University with a Masters Degree. A World War II Navy veteran, John taught classroom band and chorus in all grade levels for 33 years, mostly in Delaware and some in Pennsylvania. Retiring in 1986, he moved to Salvo, NC on Hatteras Island, and later split his time between Salvo and Clarksville, before moving to West Virginia. John was active in the Wilmington Opera Society, organist in Cressona, PA and choir director for Grace Lutheran in Nags Head, NC. He directed several community and church chorals while in Clarksville and was also very active in the prison ministry. Funeral services will be 3PM Sunday in the chapel at Watkins Cooper Lyon Funeral Home with Reverend Tim Berlew officiating. Interment will be in Buffalo Baptist Tabernacle Cemetery. In addition to his wife, John is survived by daughters, Cynthia H. Garcia of Clermont, Florida and Karen H. DeMello of Wilmington, Delaware; stepsons, John W. Young of Newark, Delaware and Joseph R. Young of Bristol, Tennessee; step-daughter, Robin L. Schaefer of Allentown, New Jersey; sister, Eleanor Hill of Reading, Pennsylvania; granddaughter, Serina DeMello and three step-grandchildren. The family will receive friends immediately following the service.
