Mrs. Joyce Ann Dalton Nunn, 73, died Saturday, December 20, 2008 at MeadowView Terrace. The daughter of Luster Thornton and Willie Irene Sizemore Dalton, Joyce was a graduate of Chase City High School and attended Longwood College. In her early twenties, Joyce was employed with First and Merchants Bank, Shaw AFT and Burlington Industries. She left the workforce to care for her four children and this role as mother and friend best describe her life.. She served as an inspiration to others. She was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis at the age of 25 and endured years of debilitating illness, hospitalizations and long term care. But, God used her illness to serve as an instrument of His love and grace as she constantly inspired others with her lack of self pity to greet everyone with kindness, hospitality and a sweet smile. She had the ability to recall the amazing detail of past experiences and memories. People eagerly awaited those stories and as a result, visits with Joyce were always enjoyable and entertaining. It is her role as Mother that best defines her. There was no sacrifice too great for her children. Her legacy is that of a devoted mother, who strived to give her children unconditional love, even when it was difficult. She cared deeply for each of her children, their spouses and her grandchildren. Joyce loved God and strived to live a righteous life. She was humble. She was courageous and determined. With all that she endured, she was not bitter. She kept her eye focused toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Jesus Christ. Joyce is now in heaven with our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Joyce was a member of Clarksville Baptist Church and her services will be held there on Tuesday at 2PM with the Reverend Greg Randall officiating. Interment will follow at Gravel Hill Cemetery. Joyce is survived by her children, James Leonard Nunn, II and his friend, Judy Lane of Farmville; Timothy Edward Nunn and wife Judy Martin Nunn of Greensboro, NC; Sheri Nunn States and husband Michael Edward of Charlottesville and Pamela Dalton Nunn and her friend, David Rohr of Farmville. Her grandchildren, Matthew Edward Nunn of Greensboro, NC and Dalton Edward States of Charlottesville; sister Betty Mae Palmer of Skipwith and brother Sterling Dalton of Oxford, NC also survive. The family will receive friends 7-9PM Monday evening at Watkins Cooper Lyon Funeral Home. We want to take this opportunity to thank this community for your love and care throughout her life. So many members of this community, especially the endless number of churches, remained faithful to her, never forgetting her even when she moved away. It seemed she has been on every prayer list within a 16o mile radius. She loved this community and enjoyed living near her friends and family. We want to especially thank Clarksville Baptist Church and Bethel Baptist Church for your continued faithfulness for decades. In addition, we want to thank the staff and volunteers of Meadowview Terrace. Your love and care over the years, as well as the increased attention received when she returned from UVA Hospital is a model for other healthcare facilities to follow. Thank you for treating our mom like your mom. There are too many to name, but we must thank Dr. Allen for your loving care, patience and amazing kindness. You are a blessing to this community. We also need to thank her main caregivers, Rosa and Deena. Our love for you cannot be adequately expressed. Faith, we are thankful that you were with her on her last day on earth. We also want to thank Halifax Hospice for your help during those final weeks. Your guidance was invaluable. We love Mrs. Josie for her flexibility and love sharing the room with mom. Thank you to her husband Joe for his care too. We will miss seeing you everyday "love". We want to thank dear friends and family. Edith, you called mom every day to chat with her. A friendship that has spanned over 50 years! Nell, for taking care of mom when she was at home and at Meadowview. To our cousins Sharon, Myrna and Carol, Reba, Nancy and Grace for taking turns making sure Mom ate these last few months and for your companionship, which greatly enhanced mom's life through a difficult time.
