Boydton, VA -- Joyce Evon Lorenzen Oertel, wife of John Thomas Oertel, passed away on Thursday, May 26, 2022, at the age of 86. Born in Castana, IA on November 28, 1935, she was the daughter of the late Irven Theodore and Helen Buck Lorenzen. Joyce was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother, who graciously supported her family. She enjoyed bowling, knitting and cooking. Joyce shared her talents, providing winter caps for the children of the community and was renown for her raisin crème, banana cream pies and cinnamon rolls. She was a member of the VFW Auxiliary. In addition to her husband of 66 years, Joyce is survived by her children, Danny Lee Oertel (Deborah) of Chesapeake and Shelly Oertel Forbes (Dusty) of Baskerville; grandchildren, Whitney Oertel, Jordan Oertel, Jessica Queen (Chase), Holly Callahan (Jarrett); great grandchildren, Corbin Queen, Paxton Queen, Everrett Callahan and John Callahan. She is also survived by siblings, Donna Watt and Duane Lorenzen (Lucy). A son, Scott Oertel, preceded her in death. A memorial service will be held in the chapel at Watkins Cooper Lyon Funeral Home on Tuesday, May 31st at 2:00 P.M. The Reverend Chuck Barton will officiate the service. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. A private family burial will occur at a later date.
