Katilene Langford Holmes

October 25, 1931 — February 8, 2025

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Katilene Langford Holmes, a beloved mother, grandmother, sister, teacher, and friend. Katilene left this world peacefully on Saturday, February 8th, 2025, at the age of 93, at her residence in Fuquay-Varina, NC.

Born on October 25th, 1931, in Saluda, SC, Katilene was a beacon of love and wisdom to everyone she encountered. She graduated from Winthrop University after beginning college at the remarkable age of 14 and devoted 43 years of her life to teaching high school English across North and South Carolina. She inspired generations of students with her dedication and passion for education, starting her teaching career at the tender age of 18.

A woman of faith, Katilene was deeply involved in her church community, notably offering transportation to widows and church members for appointments and events until she was 90. Her family proudly recalls her profound relationship with the Lord, which was only surpassed by her love and dedication to them.

Katilene cherished spending time with her family and was survived by her loving children Alvin Randolph Holmes and his wife Dianne, and James Edward Holmes and his wife Donna. Her grandchildren, Liza Griffin with husband Bradley, Amanda Chait with husband Zack, Carter Holmes with wife Leigh, and Ashley Beth Murphy with husband Jaron, held a special place in her heart, as did her great-grandchildren, Leah Griffin, Anne-Marie Griffin, Elanore Chait, Isaac Chait, and Addie Murphy. She also leaves behind her dear sister, Shirley Logan, and her cherished sisters-in-law, Montez Lankford and Sarah Langford Andrews, along with numerous nieces and nephews.

Katilene was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Alvin Rhett Holmes, her parents, James and Viola Langford, as well as her siblings, Fred Langford, Ben Langford, and Brenda Fowler.

A dedicated and compassionate woman, Katilene found joy in travelling and had a fondness for games like bridge and rummikub, which she often played with her loved ones.

Friends and family will gather to celebrate her life and legacy on Sunday, February 16th, 2025, at Ebenezer Baptist Church, 303 Airport Rd. Trenton, SC 29847. A visitation will commence at 1:00 pm, followed by the funeral service at 2:00 pm.
