Buffalo Junction, VA Lawrence Whitney “Jack” Burnett, 95, passed away Thursday, February 16, 2017 at his home.He was preceded in death by his wife of 72 years, Elizabeth Frazier Burnett.Mr. Burnett was born July 27, 1921 in Buffalo Junction, Virginia to the late James Richard and Fannie Gold Burnett. Jack served his country in the United States Army during World War II.He was employed with Burlington Industries for 30 years, retiring as a maintenance mechanic in 1984.A weekend farmer, Jack was happiest when he was on his tractor.His favorite pastime was golf. Mr. Burnett is survived by his daughters and sons-in-law, Brenda B. and Fredric Powell of South Boston, Barbara B. and David Ascher of Smithfield and son and daughter-in-law, Michael R. and Jackie Burnett of Clarksville.His grandchildren, Richard B. Powell (Renee) and Lewis D. Powell (Tammy), all of South Boston, Elizabeth P. “Beth” Redd of Roxboro, NC and Melissa J. Noel, deceased and her husband, Gregory Noel of Smithfield; and great-grandchildren, F. Allen Powell, and Whitney P. Claiborne (C.J.) all of South Boston, Colton G. Powell of Richmond, Logan E. Redd of Roxboro and Michaela G. Noel of Smithfield and many nieces and nephews.Mr. Burnett was one of eleven children.His sister, Betty Gay Coghill survives.He was predeceased by his siblings, Lillian Burnett, Cindy Arrington, Frances Maddox, Virginia Farrish, Evelyn Murray, Robert “Dick” Burnett, James “Hoot” Burnett, Henry Burnett and John “Ben” Burnett. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Sunday, February 19, 2017 in the chapel at Watkins Cooper Lyon Funeral Home with the Reverends Jane T. Lyon and Joey H. Tucker officiating.Burial with military honors will take place immediately following the service at Gravel Hill Cemetery. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service and at all other times at the home. Jack leaves behind his “Molly Cat”, whom he loved dearly.
