Lena Madison Claiborne Smith

Lena Madison Claiborne Smith, wife of the late Maclin McCarty Smith, passed away on Sunday, May 2, 2021, at the age of 96. She was born in Mecklenburg County on May 21, 1924, to the late Ryland and Minnie Wooten Claiborne. Lena was a graduate of Boydton High School and earned her teaching degree from Longwood College. During her teaching career, she taught in Clarksville, Chase City, Danville and Roanoke schools. Lena traveled and lived in many states but retired to her hometown of Skipwith in 1983. She was a member of Clarksville Presbyterian Church. Cherishing her memory are her daughter and son-in-law, Sandra Madison Hill and Jerry Hill of Chandler, AZ; granddaughters, Amy Paige Vaughn and Courtney Madison Sanders; great grandchildren, Meghan Vaughn, Parker Vaughn, Peyton Madison Sanders and Austin Sanders, as well as nieces Peggy Easter and Anne Owen and nephew, Tim Ward. In addition to her husband and parents, Lena was preceded in death by sisters, Margaret C. Wright and Lorene C. Ward. Graveside services will be held at 11 A.M. on Saturday, July 10, 2021, in Liberty Baptist Church Cemetery. The Reverend Annette Goard will officiate the service.
