Lucy Sumner Price

June 25, 1927 — January 17, 2023

Lucy Sumner Price died peacefully on January 17, 2023, at the age of 95. She was born on June 25, 1927, in Raleigh, NC, to the late Oliver Groce Sumner and Lucy Harris Sumner. Her sister, Martha Ann Sumner, died at the age of 12 of a brain aneurism. Lucy was married to the love of her life, the late John Moody Price in 1947. She has two children, Oliver Scott Price and wife, Mina, and Betsy Price Bowen and husband, Patrick; four grandchildren, Christopher Scott Price (Aileen), Lisa Price Goss (Brendan), Tracey Sumner Bowen, and Annie Price O’Donnell (Timothy). She has one great grandchild, Adam Christopher Price.

Lucy and John raised their family in Adelphi, MD, before moving full-time to Clarksville, VA, where they lived looking out onto beautiful Buggs Island Lake. Once settling in, Lucy became active in her much-loved St. Timothy’s Episcopal Church, enjoyed tap dance lessons with a group of women that became great friends, became a member of the Red Hat Ladies and was a docent at the Clarksville Regional Museum. Lucy loved Clarksville and looking at the lake from her chair in the living room. Many friends helped her stay at her home with special mention and love to Barry and Carolyn Hughes, Trish Garland, Rev. Susan Grimm, and Jackie Lilly. There came a time when she needed more care and in 2020, she moved to the Commonwealth Senior Living in South Boston and remained there until her passing. There she was given excellent care by the staff – even making new friends. Our family would also like to thank Georgia Walton for the love, care, friendship, and invaluable help she gave to Lucy and her family.

Donations in Lucy’s memory can be made to St. Timothy’s Episcopal Church in Clarksville, VA; Commonwealth Senior Living in South Boston, VA; Hospice of Virginia, or the charity of your choice.

A funeral service will be held on February 18, 2023, at St. Timothy’s Episcopal Church at 2:00 P.M. followed with a reception. Private burial will be held a later date.
