Margaret Moore Hatter

April 19, 1922 — October 13, 2019

Margaret Moore Hatter, 97, died Sunday, October 13 in Charlottesville, surrounded by her loving family. Margaret was born April 19, 1922, in Clarksville, Virginia, to Julia Mary Chappell and William David Moore. Born into a large and loving farm family – seven siblings, seven step-siblings – she considered herself blessed to live such a wonderful life, characteristic of ‘the greatest generation.’ Valedictorian of Clarksville High School’s class of 1939, Margaret furthered her education at Richmond’s Smithdeal-Massey Business College, then moved to Williamsburg to work in the Supply Division at Fort Eustis, where she helped win World War II and also met the handsome Army lieutenant she would soon marry. The newlyweds lived their ‘happily ever after’ in Baltimore, raising two sons who are eternally grateful for their loving support and the faith and values they instilled. A woman of tremendous faith – baptized and nurtured at Bluestone Presbyterian (Clarksville), nourished at Grace Methodist (Baltimore), deepened at Olivet Presbyterian (Charlottesville) – Margaret carried on and passed along that legacy of her parents and predecessors, a beacon of love and wellspring of prayer for family, friends and everyone she met. A frequent hostess who cooked wonderfully well for gatherings of family and friends, Margaret also enjoyed “playing with the worms” in her lovely flower gardens. She was an avid Baltimore Orioles fan and amassed an encyclopedic knowledge of the team through the years. Margaret was preceded in death by her loving husband of 42 years, Louis M. Hatter of Baltimore. She is survived by: son Louis M. Hatter Jr., daughter-in-law Kathryn Buckley Hatter, and grandchildren Julia Raeford Hatter and Charles Louis Hatter of Stanardsville, Virginia; son Gary Chappell Hatter, daughter-in-law Camille Chen Hatter, and grandchildren Faith Margaret Chen Hatter and David Chen Hatter of Charlottesville; and sister Julia Alice Baskervill of South Boston, Virginia. A memorial service to celebrate Margaret’s life will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, October 19, at Olivet Presbyterian Church, 2575 Garth Road, Charlottesville. Burial will be at 4 p.m. Sunday, October 20, at Bluestone Cemetery in Clarksville. As an alternative to flowers, donations are encouraged in Margaret’s memory to Greene County Rescue Squad (P.O. Box 302, Stanardsville, VA 22973) or Pathlight International (www.pathlight.org).
