Martin Nixon Greenwood was born December 29, 1939 to the late Martin Thompson Greenwood and Eula Nixon Greenwood and passed away
December 21, 2024. Martin grew up and lived in Raleigh, North Carolina,graduating from Broughton High School and University of North Carolina Chapel Hill. Serving in the US Army from 1963-1965, he continued in the active reserves until being honorably discharged in 1969. Martin owned and operated the Carolina Clipping Service, a company founded by his mother. Upon retirement, Martin and Paula moved to Buggs Island Lake in Virginia where they had spent most weekends for many years and enjoyed being active in their Ponderosa community.
Predeceased by his parents, his wife, Paula Fry Greenwood, and brother,John Decatur Greenwood, Martin is survived by his brother, Thompson
Hollowell Greenwood (Faith) of Midlothian, VA, his sister, Marti Greenwood Ogus (Benjamin Deans) of Nags Head, NC and his devoted friend and caretaker, Thomas Guill of Oxford, NC. He was uncle to 11 nephews and nieces and doting father to Louie, his beloved cat.
Martin was an active UNC alumnus and an enthusiastic fan of all Tarheel sports. An Eagle Scout, Martin was a Scout Leader at White Memorial
Presbyterian Church in Raleigh for many years. Being an avid boater, Martin was in the NC Power Squadron and enjoyed waterskiing and fishing. He was also a talented gardener and prolific reader and took great pride in still owning his 1965 Mustang convertible. Martin’s last act of service to others was being an organ donor from which his family takes great comfort.
A celebration of his life will be held at a date to be determined. Memorial donations may be made to the SPCA or your local animal shelter.
