Mary Emma Sparks Bowers of South Boston passed peacefully Thursday, June 13, 2013, at her home surrounded by her love ones. Mrs. Bowers was born in Wytheville on May 1, 1934 and was 79 years of age. She was the daughter of the late Andrew and Netty Ann Viars Sparks and was married to Jessie L. Bowers, who survives. Mrs. Bowers was retired from J.P. Stevens. She enjoyed cooking and gardening, but her main enjoyment was her family. In addition to her husband, she is survived by three sons, Edward R. Fariss and wife Sharon of Hereford, N.C., Everett L. Fariss and Jessie Ray Bowers, both of South Boston; her grandchildren, Jason Edward Fariss and wife Kim of Goldsboro, N.C., Justin A. Bowers, Nicholas R. Bowers, and Matthew K. Bowers all of South Boston; one great-grandchild, Jason Ethan Fariss; one sister, Margie Sparks Ratliff; and numerous nieces and nephews. One son, James Lewis Fariss, five sisters, and one brother, also preceded Mrs. Bowers in death. A memorial service will be held at the home, 1104 Cluster Ridge Trail, South Boston, on Sunday, June 16, 2013, at 2 p.m. with the Rev. Randy Holmes officiating. The family will receive friends at the home.
