Mary Elizabeth Barksdale Gunter

SOUTH BOSTON Mrs. Mary Elizabeth Barksdale Gunter passed away at Sentara Woodview on Wednesday, September 16, 2020 at the age of 90. Mary was born on May 8, 1930 to the late Edward Norman Barksdale and the late Carrie Bullington Barksdale on the family tobacco farm near Gretna, VA.As a young adult she left home to work at the Lane Company in Altavista, VA.After marriage to Ernest M. Gunter, Jr, her devoted husband of 67 years who survives, she dedicated herself to her family. Mary and Ernest were active members of Ash Avenue Baptist Church since 1970. She enjoyed spending time with family and travelling whenever possible. Mary was a loving mother to sons Ralph and wife Teresa of Lynchburg, VA and Keith and wife Cheryl of Culpeper, VA. She took great pride in grandchildren Neil Gunter and wife Amanda of Aylett, VA, Meredith Gunter and partner Kevin Tiller of Richmond, VA, and Amber Gunter of Culpeper, VA, as well as great grandchildren McKinley Gunter and Ridge Gunter. Mary was preceded in death by siblings Clarence Barksdale, Harry Barksdale, Hazel Warden, Paul Barksdale and Fred Barksdale. She is survived by sister, Alice Stephens of Danville, VA, along with many nieces and nephews and extended family. Funeral services will be held at 2 PM on Sunday, September 20, 2020 at Brooks Lyon Funeral Home. Interment will follow at Oak Ridge Cemetery. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service, 1:00-2:00 pm on Sunday at Brooks Lyon Funeral Home. For those not able to attend, the service will be live-streamed on Brooks Lyon Funeral Home facebook page. In keeping with CDC guidelines for Covid-19, we will observe social distancing and face masks for those in attendance.
