Mary Frances Whitt "Bye" Cole

November 11, 1925 — January 18, 2014

Mrs. Mary Frances Whitt “Bye” Cole of South Boston, VA passed peacefully on Saturday, January 18, 2014 at the age of 88. She was born in Virgilina, VA on Nov. 11, 1925 to the late Caleb Chappell Whitt, Sr. and the late Annie Hudson Whitt, and was married to the late Arthur Edward “Pete” Cole for 42 years. “Bye” worked for the Department of the Navy in Washington D.C. during WWII, and later worked for Fuller Roberts Clinic where she retired after 25 years as a receptionist. She joined Shady Grove United Methodist Church at age 11, and was also a member of Henry W. Woodall #80 Order of the Eastern Star. Her love of family, friends and traveling lead her on many adventures to the beach, mountains, ball games and church and school activities. “Granny Cole” had many children, grandchildren and great grandchildren that loved her as much as she loved them. Her survivors include her children, Scotty C. Doyle and husband, Tom of Midlothian, VA, Janice A. Cole and husband, Howard Hendricks of Gibsonville, NC, Bonita C. Nelson and husband, Ricky of South Boston, VA, Mary Arthur Cole of Kernersville, NC and William E. “Bill” Cole and wife, Vicky of Virgilina, VA; one sister, Helen W. Sanford of Roxboro, NC; seven grandchildren, Heath Doyle and wife, Shelby, Matt Doyle and wife, Kathy, Shane Foushee and wife, April, Jody Nelson and wife, Katye, Tracy N. Roller and husband, Daniel, Jobeth Cole Weddle and John Arthur Cole; and seven great grandchildren. In addition to her husband and parents, she was prececed in death by a sister, Nell Whitt Melton and two brothers, Caleb Chappell "C.J." Whitt, Jr. and Archer Hutchins "Buster" Whitt. Funeral services for Mrs. “Bye” Cole will be held on Tuesday, January 21, 2014 at 2:00 pm at Shady Grove United Methodist Church, 8007 E. Hyco Rd., Virgilina, VA 24598. The family will receive friends in the church fellowship hall on Tuesday from 12 noon until 1:45 pm, and at other times at the home of Ricky and Bonita Nelson, 1068 Newton Farm Rd., South Boston, VA.
