Mary Ross Larson Davis

August 30, 1921 — June 2, 2014

Davis, Mary Ross Larson, 92, formerly of Clarksville, died peacefully on June 2, 2014 at St. Mary's Hospital in Richmond. She was preceded in death by her husband, Samuel Davis Jr, and her parents, Nils Henry Larson and Mary Ross Leckie Larson. She is survived by her sons, Samuel Davis III and Peter Nils Davis, and her daughter, Jane Ross Davis, and seven grandchildren and five great grandchildren. Mrs. Davis was a native of Chappaqua, New York and a graduate of New York University. She earned her MEd at the University of North Carolina. She taught physical education at Halifax and Mecklenburg County high schools for more than 20 years. An active layperson in the Episcopal Church, Mrs. Davis was president of the Episcopal Churchwomen of the Diocese of Southern Virginia, served on the Diocesan Council for multiple terms and was a lay delegate to the General Convention of the Episcopal Church on three occasions. She enjoyed several trips to Israel during which she toured and took courses with clergy and laypeople at St. George's College in Jerusalem. Ms. Davis will be remembered as a dynamic community leader, promoter of women's sports and devoted mother. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on June 21st at St. Timothy's Episcopal Church in Clarksville with internment to follow. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Clarksville Regional Museum, St. Timothy's Episcopal Church, Clarksville, and Immanuel Episcopal Church, Old Church, Virginia.
