Maryland Puryear Matthews

SOUTH BOSTON - Mrs. Maryland Puryear Matthews passed away Sunday, September 2, 2018 at the age of 86.Born in Halifax County on August 3, 1932, she was the daughter of the late Roy Puryear and the late Mary Willie Morris Puryear. Maryland was married to the late Luther Herbert Matthews, Sr. She was an active member of Cherry Hill United Methodist Church and the pillar of her family. She was a former employee of Leggett, Dafs, and McCullom-Ferrell. Surviving are her son, Luther Herbert Matthews, Jr. of South Boston; her daughter, Marcia Matthews Thomas, and husband Jimmy of Eden, NC; her sisters, Joanne Puryear Smith and Roberta Coleman; her granddaughters, Teresa Link Boschen and husband, Tim and Ayme Link Currin and husband, Sean; her step grandchildren, Niki Dunlap and Jonathan Thomas; and her great grandchildren, Reed Boschen, Morgan Boschen, Zane Currin, and Kamdyn Dunlap. Graveside services for Mrs. Matthews will be held on Wednesday, September 5, 2018 at 11 AM at Cherry Hill United Methodist Church Cemetery with Reverend Pat Neilson officiating. The family will receive friends following the service at her home, 2195 E. Hyco Rd., South Boston.
