Mr. Melvin J. Yancey of 804 Berry Hill Rd.,South Boston, VA died Friday, May 25, 2012 at the age of 79. He was born in Halifax Co., VA on February 10, 1933 to the late Willie Thornton Yancey and the late Lottie Thomas Yancey. He was a retired truck driver for Burlington Ind. and was a member of Glenwood Methodist Church. Survivors include his wife, Natalie May Yancey of South Boston; two daughters, Maxine Y. Coleman of Madison Heights and Lisa Yancey McNeil and husband, Steven of Zebulon, NC; two sons, Christopher Ray Yancey and wife, Bobbie of Evington and Jay Thornton Yancey and wife, Melinda of Forrest; daughter-in-law, Judy Yancey of Amherst; step daughter, Lenora Garabedan and husband, Ed of West Chester, PA; two step sons, Kevin Rydzewski and wife, Kim of Nottingham, NH and Darrin Rydzewski and wife, Melissa of Alexandria, KY; sister, Eunice Y. Slayton of Vernon Hill; 13 grandchildren, 7 great grandchildren, 3 great great grandchildren, 9 step grandchildren, and 3 step great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, a son, Melvin Jackson Yancey, Jr., a step daughter, Dorene Monroe, two sisters, Virginia Harris and Frances Brown, a brother, Luther B. Yancey, and a granddaughter, Teresa Wright. Funeral services will be held on Sunday, May 27 at 3 PM at Glenwood United Methodist Church with Rev. Bob Woodfin officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends at Brooks Funeral Home Saturday from 7 until 8:30 PM and at other times at the home.
