Mildred Jones Barksdale

Mrs. Mildred Jones Barksdale of Sandy Beach Road, South Boston, died Monday, June 10, 2013, at Halifax Regional Hospital at the age of 86. The wife of Jesse W. Barksdale of the home, she was born in Halifax County on August 2, 1926, a daughter of the late Sydnor Archer Jones and the late Iola Trammell Jones. Mrs. Barksdale was very active at First Cross Roads Baptist Church in Turbeville and loved her family and friends. In addition to her husband, she is survived by a daughter, Brenda B. Yancey and husband Larry of South Boston; and a son, Jesse W. Barksdale, Jr. and wife Veronna of Alton. Other survivors include grandchildren, Michael Snead and wife Sheila of Alton; Lydia Y. Vernon and husband Scott of Burlington, NC; great grandsons, Blake and Hayden Snead; step-great granddaughter, Brianna Chisholm; great grandsons, Seth and Ethan Vernon. Also surviving are two sisters, Mary J. Griffith of Wake Forest, NC, Maxine J. Rice and husband John of Wake Forest, NC; one brother H. E. Jones and wife Gail of Springfield, Ohio. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by four sisters, Mealie J. McCormick, Margaret J. Milton, Maggie J. Adams, Mable J. Prowell, and four brothers, Sam Flenoury, Hurley, James Allen, and Bobby Milton Jones. The family will receive friends Wednesday, June 12, from 7:00 to 8:30 PM at Brooks Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM on Thursday, June 13, at Brooks Funeral Brooks with the Rev. Dan Ward officiating. Burial will follow in Halifax Memorial Gardens.
