Mildred Chandler Williams, retired Mecklenburg County teacher, died Friday, August 29, 2008 following a brief illness. Born September 1, 1916 at Buffalo Junction, VA, she was the daughter of Belle Yancey Chandler and Seymour Graham Chandler. Her husband, Lewis Randolph Williams, predeceased her in 1997. She is survived by two sons, Lewis Randolph Williams, Jr. of Fairfax and Graham Chandler Williams of Midlothian. She has 5 grandchildren, 2 step-grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. Mrs. Williams was a native of Mecklenburg County. She received B.S. and M.S. degrees from Longwood College. Her career began in Piney Grove in 1935 in a two-room school. After time at home with her sons she returned to the classroom for 26 years, retiring as supervisor of curriculum and materials in Mecklenburg in 1978. She was an active member of St. Timothy's Episcopal Church in Clarksville; was an accomplished gardener, and with her husband was an avid competitive bridge player. She was a member of the National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution and Delta Kappa Gamma education sorority. Funeral services will be 2PM Sunday, September 14th at St. Timothy's Episcopal Church with The Reverend Susan Grimm officiating. Interment will follow at Oakhurst Cemetery.
