Nell Puryear Owen, 99, widow of the late Earnest Grayson Owen went to her Heavenly Home on Wednesday, January 4, 2023. She was born on December 14, 1923 to the late Flavious Linwood Puryear and Willie Louise Coghill Puryear of Buffalo Springs, VA. Nell was a graduate of Clarksville High School and attended Pan American Business School in Richmond, VA. Before moving back to Buffalo Junction, she worked several years for Virginia State Government. Nell was a devout Christian and member of Buffalo Baptist Church where she worked with the Sunbeams, GA's, WMU, and taught Sunday School for many years. She loved her family and friends unconditionally never hesitating to help someone in need, especially her four great-aunts (Lillie Puryear Wiley, Sue, Edith, and Rosa Talley). Many will remember being greeted with Nell's smiling face during the years she worked for Thompson's Pharmacy in Clarksville. In her spare time, she enjoyed reading, and working in her flower garden. Nell was a devoted mother and special mentor to her granddaughter, Erin and two great grandchildren Hannah and Aaron Thomas.
Survivors include her daughters, Margaret (Jane) O. Jones (Harold) and Kathyrn (Kathy) O. Holt (Ed) of Chesterfield, VA; granddaughter, Erin Jones Crawford (Tommy); great-granddaughter Hannah Woodell and great-grandson Aaron Thomas Crawford of Clermont, FL; "special" sister-in-law, Martha Yancey Owen of Buffalo Junction, VA; nieces, Joni Owen Woltz (Eddie) of Virgilina, VA; Jeanne Owen Burton (Dale) of Raleigh, NC; nephews, Paul Roche (Cindy) of Yorktown, VA; Dave Roche (Vickie) of Cedar Hill, TX; niece, Betty Smith (Jay) of New Orleans, LA; and nephews, Owen McMullen (Gail) of New Orleans, LA; and Scott McMullen of New Orleans, LA. Nell's family would like to extend special thanks to Shamika and Daisy, who lovingly cared for Nell.
In addition to her parents and husband, Nell was preceded in death by her beloved sister, Doris Puryear McMullen; "special" sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Foy Owen Gordon-Abady and Andrew Marshall Owen; along with many very special friends and family members.
A memorial service for Nell will be held on Saturday, March 4, 2023, at 2 pm at Buffalo Baptist Church with interment to follow in the church cemetery. Her family will meet friends and loved ones for visitation following the service, in the church fellowship hall.
