Clarksville, VA Olive Slaughter West, 98, passed away peacefully on October 15, 2019.On October 25, 1920 her late mother, Ruby Stegall Slaughter, and late father, Robert Glover Slaughter, celebrated her birth.Olive was married to Roger West, who preceded her in death. Memories . . . where do I begin?Olive had many loves. Her sisters, Dorothy (or Dot as most knew her) and Elsie (or Eck as most knew her); both preceding her in death. Her children, Robert Lamar Harrell who preceded her in death (his wife Carol B. Harrell of Clarksville, Virginia) and Diane Richardson (of Oklahoma). Her grandchildren; Kathy Harrell (of Vermont), Robert Harrell (of Florida), Adam Harrell (his wife Christie of Midlothian, Virginia), Christi Harrell Epps (of South Boston, Virginia), Debbie Wroten (her husband Jim of New Mexico), Karen Richardson (of Oklahoma), and Theresa Reeves (who preceded her in death). And there are many great grandchildren and great-great grandchildren whom she absolutely cherished. Playing music, painting pictures, traveling the world, and dancing were things she loved to do; all of which we will long associate with her memory. She shared her loves with her family and friends in many ways. Some she helped learn to play music, others have pictures she painted, while others have photos with her from travel they shared and many shared a dance with her. Through her life, Olive held many titles. She was a devoted daughter, a comforting mother, a loving wife, a spoiling grandmother, a college graduate, and a true and loyal friend. There are no buildings named after her; nor monuments erected in her honor; but she had the opportunity to know and love each and every friend as well as all of her family members. How much more blessed can a person be?Her legacy to all who knew her would be to encourage everyone to do their best, see the beauty in everything around you, dance every chance you can, have no regrets, incorporate the arts in your life, and make something amazing out of your life.As such, when you think about Olive’s life and think about her in the future, you can look into an evening sunset or the earliest spring daffodils or amongst the flitting and fluttering butterflies; and there she will be in one form or another.
