Ollie Stafford Hammock

Ollie Stafford Hammock of Halifax, VA, passed away on Tuesday, October 10, 2023, at the age of 84. Born on October 16, 1938, in Halifax County, he was the son of the late James and Marie Tuck Hammock.

From the start of a very early age, he adopted a love for fishing, whether it was alone or with family, and could often be found on a boat in either the Bannister or Staunton River. He taught his girls how to bait hooks and cast a line and on many occasions, those lines got hung up in the trees. Later on in life, he would strap a life vest on his grandson, Cody, and take him along.

Ollie worked for more than 30 years building bridges. He retired from English Construction Company in 2000 leaving behind not only coworkers, but valued friends. He treasured the many friendships he made over the years. When traveling with his daughter Tracey, he would often reminisce about bridges he assisted in building as they drove over them.

Cherishing his memory are his daughters and grandchildren, Tracey Rumer and her son, Cody, and Carolyn Jones (Warren) and their daughter, Courtney; and siblings, Rachel Clay (Frank), Frances St. John, Margaret Morton, Kenneth Hammock and Earl Hammock. He was preceded in death by brothers, Otey Hammock and John Wayne Hammock.

A Celebration of Life service will be held at 2:00 P.M. on Saturday, October 21, 2023, in the chapel of Brooks Lyon Funeral Home. The family will receive friends one hour before the service and all other times at Tracey's residence, 4057 Landover Lane, Raleigh, NC. Those planning to attend the service are asked to come as you are. Ollie was not a suit and tie guy, but instead bib overalls and suspenders were his attire of choice.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations to the Halifax County Cancer Association be considered.
