Oscar Glenn Cliborne

May 6, 1925 — October 6, 2011

Oscar Glenn Cliborne, 86, of 129 Hershberger Road in Roanoke passed away Thursday, October 6th at Roanoke Memorial Hospital. He was the son of the late Harvey Nathan and Lillie Glasscock Cliborne and was born in Halifax County but had lived in Roanoke for the past 36 years. Oscar G. Cliborne was a Private First Class in the US Army, 1st Battalion, 26th Infantry. He received both Bronze Medals and Purple Heart for his meritorious achievement in connection with the military operations against the enemy in the Europen Theater beginning in 1944. He also served in the 42nd Rainbow Division and the 83rd Division in Germany. Mr. Cliborne is survived by one sister, Gladys Elkins of Roanoke, nieces and husbands, Jane and Gene Lloyd, Phil and Joyce Hill of Virgilina, and great nephew Chad Lloyd and family of Oxford, NC; nieces Eva Elkins, Linda Hancock, Becky Jones, and Wayne Elkins, all of Roanoke. He was preceded in death by his parents, his brother and wife, Harvey McDowell and Peggy Cliborne of Virgilina; brother-in-law, Harry Elkins and nephew Richard Elkins of Roanoke. A graveside memorial service will be held at the Virgilina Cemetery on Sunday, October 9th at 4PM with family members presiding.
