Rachel Wilson Matthews

Rachel Wilson Matthews of Virgilina passed away on Sunday, February 11, 2024, at the age of 87.  Born in Halifax County on March 30, 1936, she was the daughter of the late William Carrington Wilson and Esma Elliott Wilson.  She was preceded in death by her husband, Lawrence Ollie Matthews.

Rachel loved cooking for her family and friends, loved to be with people and enjoyed watching hummingbirds.  She always enjoyed senior day at Hitesburg Baptist Church, playing bingo and fellowship with all the people. She would always take her chocolate pies.  Rachel loved her family dearly and will be missed by all of them.

She is survived by sons, Dwight Matthews (Sharon) and Kevin Matthews (Vicky); daughter, Sharon Glasscock; grandchildren, Brian Matthews (Tracy), Scott Matthews (Christy), Reggie Matthews (Blair), Adam Glasscock (Krystal) and April McGraw (Nick); step grandchildren, Chris Emory (Lida) and Bradley Hines (Alyssa); great grandchildren and great great grandchildren; sister, Maxine Powell; and her special friend, Thomas "Dickey Bird" Puryear.

In addition to her parents and her husband, she was preceded in death by siblings, Edith Clark, W. C. Wilson Jr. and James Wallace Wilson; and son-in-law, J.T. Glasscock.

A Funeral Service will be held at 11:00 AM on Wednesday, February 14, 2024, at Brooks Lyon Funeral Home Chapel with Reverend Doug Ballew officiating.  Burial will follow in Halifax Memorial Gardens.  The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service, 10 AM - 11 AM at Brooks Lyon Funeral Home.
