Clarksville, VA Colonel (Ret.) Richard Franklin Alley, Jr., husband of Jean Burns Alley, passed away on Wednesday, April 18, 2017 at the age of 70.He was born in Bluefield, WV on July 10, 1946 to the late Myra Loraine Crockett Alley and Richard Franklin Alley, Sr.Colonel Alley graduated in 1968 from Virginia Tech and was promptly drafted into the United States Army.He then attended Officer Candidate School in 1969. His 27 year career included Vietnam, War College, a Master’s degree from Webster University, and becoming a Jump Master. He received a bronze star before retiring in 1995. After retiring from the military, he spent 8 years working for the National Ground Intelligence Center in Charlottesville, VA. The Colonel served for many years as a Scoutmaster for the Boy Scouts, and was a lifetime member of the VFW Post 8163 and the American Legion Post 45. In addition to his wife, Colonel Alley is survived by his sons and daughters-in-law, Robert W. and Marie Alley,David C. and Abbi Alley all of Charlottesville, VA and Richard T. and Elizabeth Alley of Bristow, VA; grandchildren, Florence Loraine Alley and Lillian Jean Alley and sisters, Mary Sue Crommelin of Virginia Beach, VA and Myra Wood of Ocala, Fl. Services with full military honors will be held at Arlington National Cemetery on Wednesday, August 30, 2017 at 11:00 a.m. In lieu of flowers, please consider donations to The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society http://www.lls.org/.
